09/14/2010 (10:00PM – 11:00PM) (Tuesday) : ADAM HAS HIS HANDS FULL WITH WORK AND FAMILY NEEDS, AND SARAH STRUGGLES TO FIND THE RIGHT CAREER PATH — WILLIAM BALDWIN (“Dirty Sexy Money”) AND MINKA KELLY (“Friday Night Lights”) GUEST STAR – In the season two premiere Adam (Peter Krause) is overwhelmed by family needs and increasing demands at work from boss Gordon Flint (guest star William Baldwin). Zeek (Craig T. Nelson) is overly confident in his “fix-it” skills as he tries to repair a leak in the barn and Joel (Sam Jaeger) is enlisted by the family to help. Elsewhere, Sarah (Lauren Graham) tries to find her place in the world as Crosby (Dax Shepard) prepares for a visit from Jasmine (Joy Bryant) and Jabbar (Tyree Brown). Meanwhile, Kristina (Monica Potter) tries to teach Haddie (Sarah Ramos) how to drive and, along with behavioral aide Gaby (guest star Minka Kelly), help their son Max (Max Burkholder) through a crisis. Bonnie Bedelia, Erika Christensen, Miles Heizer, Savannah Paige Rae and Mae Whitman also star.

Lauren Graham’s dance card on Parenthood is officially full.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Kevin Alejandro—a.k.a. Lafayette’s current squeeze Jesus on True Blood—is joining the NBC drama for a multi-episode arc as a love interest for Graham’s Sarah. Alejandro will have to duke it out with Billy Baldwin, who, as I reported last month, is also coming on board as a suitor for Sarah.

Alejandro’s character, Mike, is described as a blue-collar-type who works in the warehouse at Adam’s company—where Sarah is now employed as well. The added wrinkle? Baldwin’s character works there too as Adam’s boss.

In other Parenthood casting news, Zosia Mamet (United States of Tara‘s Courtney) has been tapped to play the recurring role of Kelsey, Amber’s moneyed new BFF. “She comes from an upper-crust kind of background,” Katims recently explained. “It becomes complicated for Sarah because Amber’s suddenly being taken into this world that’s out of her grasp.”

Parenthood‘s second season kicks off on Sept. 21.

When Parenthood premieres its second season on September 14, the Bravermans will face a lot of change. For example:

Sarah will be working with Adam.

“I’m sure she’s going to make a lot of mistakes and annoy her brother,” said Lauren Graham of the situation, adding that she’ll be dating Adam’s boss Gordon (the recently cast Billy Baldwin), who she describes as an “appealing yet dangerous” playboy with a heart.

Julia and Joel will consider a second child.
Sarah will grow jealous of Amber’s new BFF: “We’re doing a story line where Amber’s always at her friend’s house and Sarah’s trying to figure out a really cool thing to take the kids to,” producer Jason Katims said. “There’s the question of whether this girl might wind up having some stuff going on that starts to challenge the friendship.”
Haddie will have a new love interest.
Steve will not be back with Amber.
Zeke and Camille will begin the season in marriage counseling

The Television Critics Association Press Tour kicked off Tuesday with a visit to the set of NBC’s second- best drama (after Friday Night Lights, natch), Parenthood. The entire Braverman clan, save for Mae Whitman, who was at the premiere of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, was on hand to answer questions, including one about balancing story lines for the sprawling cast. “We’re planning on killing them off one episode at a time,” executive producer Jason Katims joked in response. “I wanted to start with the [premiere], but [NBC president of prime-time entertainment] Angela Bromstad wisely encouraged me to wait until sweeps.”
